180-Year-Old Soot
This photo shows the bad condition of the foundation of the interior brick wall of the ell. It was taken in October, 1996, when the original ell was being demolished. This is the west wall of the food preparation room. The chimney visible here serves the dining room fireplace. In the old days it probably also served a fireplace in this room. When Ben Barry started repairing this structure, part of it collapsed and released a huge cloud of soot. Being enveloped by a cloud of 180-year-old soot is not a pleasant experience. Just ask Ben Barry.
