Doorway to Attic
Taken in December, 1996, this photo shows the doorway to the attic. The plaster on the wall around the doorway has just been removed, exposing the brick wall underneath. Kim Goodwin and Rick Middleton are in the far end of the attic. The walls of the May House are four bricks thick. When the plaster was removed from them, as this photo shows, the mortar was found to be loose and crumbling. Something had to be done to firm up the walls. To remedy this problem, Kauble decided to parge the walls. In other words, a layer of cement was laid on them with a trowel. Then two-by-four studs were laid against them in order to provide an anchor for the drywall.
