East Wall Before Restoration
Taken in the Fall of 1995, this photo shows the east wall of the main house as it was before the restoration began. The crack visible in this photo was the focus of much worry and concern during the months leading up to the restoration. The wall in this photograph is not the original wall. The original wall collapsed back in the 1970s, during the blasting that accompanied the building of U.S. Highway 23, which runs directly behind the house. The darker bricks are the portion of the original wall that was saved. When the original wall collapsed, a new cement-block wall was erected in order to keep the rest of the house from falling. Unfortunately, it didn`t solve the problem.
