Ell Before Demolition
Taken in September, 1996, this photograph shows the north wall of the ell before it was demolished and rebuilt. The photo was taken immediately after the old porch was removed. This portion of the house was in very bad condition. The walls of the ell were demolished, brick by brick, and then, after a new foundation had been layed, new cement-block walls were erected. The new walls were then faced with bricks recovered from the old walls. The end wall of the original ell was saved, as well as the interior wall, the fireplace, and the chimney. Also saved were the ceiling beams, the door and window casings, the limestone doorsills, and the dining room`s walnut linen cabinet.
