May House Front Porch
This photo shows the front porch of the May House as it looked in March, 1997, when the restoration was still in progress. The porch`s design is based on patterns common to the Federal Period. We don`t know what the original porch looked like. Eastern Kentucky houses of the antebellum period often had balconies. In the years before microphones and public address systems, balconies often served politicians as pulpits from which to address large crowds. Tress May Francis claims that Samuel was an excellent orator, and that his senatorial speeches were `considered fine` by all who heard them.
