New Roof of Ell
This photo shows Rick Middleton standing in the recently-completed attic of the reconstructed ell. In October, 1996, the original ell was demolished and a new one was erected in its place. The floor beams seen here were saved, however. The new roof of the ell was constructed in November of 1996. Up until fairly recent times, the May House attic had flooring. Samuel May and his wife Catherine probably used the attic as a bedroom for some of their children. E. B. May, Jr. says that during the 1920s a spinning wheel and other relics were stored in the attic, but that a tenant of the house chopped them up for firewood. He also ripped up the flooring and used it for fuel.
