Tuckpointing Front Facade
This photo shows the front facade of the house as it was in October, 1996, when John Miller was tuckpointing the bricks of the front facade. The work consisted of three stages. First, the wall was cleaned with a steam cleaner, a process which removed the accumulated grime of 180 years. Second, all the loose or discolored mortar was removed. Finally, new mortar was applied wherever it was needed. Much care was taken to insure that the new mortar matched the mortar which was already in place. Tuckpointing is delicate and painstaking work, and Floyd County owes a debt of gratitude to John Miller for his fine job.
