Graves of John and Sarah May
This photo shows the graves of John May and Sarah Phillips May in the William Keathley Graveyard on Shelby Creek, Pike County, Kentucky. John was born in Lancaster, PA on January 6, 1760 and died at his homestead on Shelby Creek on January 25, 1813. The Mays were one of Eastern Kentucky`s pioneer families. Originally from Martinsburg, Virginia, they tried their luck in Eastern Tennessee before coming to Kentucky. In the Spring of 1800, they made a difficult journey through Pound Gap. Following an Indian trace, they traveled on foot with their six children, their livestock, and a wagon filled with all their worldly possessions. When they arrived on Shelby Creek, between the mouth of Robinson Creek and West (Levisa) Fork of the Big Sandy River, they started carving a farm out of the wilderness.
