Bill and Junior May
Taken in the mid-1930s, shortly after they returned to Prestonsburg, this photo shows Bill May and Junior May playing basketball next to the May House smokehouse. The smokehouse was located directly south of the one-story ell. The smokehouse was probably forty or fifty years old when this photograph was taken. In the early period, it may have served as a free-standing kitchen for the main house. Other structures also adjoined the house in the early days. According to E. B. May, Jr., a one-story barn was situated on the land now occupied by his present home. The barn contained a fattening pen for hogs and was adjoined by a hog lot. Hogs were Floyd County`s main cash crop in the antebellum period.
