Nelle was a niece of Andrew Jackson May's first wife, Mary Matilda Davidson. Dr. Robert Perry tells us in his book, "Jack May's War," of the marriage in Tazewell, VA of the twenty-two year old beauty to the seventy-three year old Colonel. The story took place about a year after the death of Mary Matilda and was told for many years by family members in Prestonsburg.
In the spring of 1902, the Davidson family traveled to Tazewell to visit Colonel May and their May in-laws. One day, while they were getting ready to visit some neighbors, Nelle showed no inclination to begin getting dressed. Her sister Victoria said, "You better hurry and get dressed, or we will be late." Nelle replied, "I'm not feeling well, so I'm not coming with you." Consequently, the group left without her. Several hours later, when they returned from their outing, they climbed the staircase of the May mansion and went to their respective rooms. When Victoria passed Colonel May's bedroom, she spied Nelle sitting in a chair and taking her shoes off. "What are you doing in Colonel May's bedroom?" she asked. Nelle replied, "I have the right to be here, because the Colonel and I have just gotten married."
Their only child, named Colonel May, Jr., was born on May 1, 1903, two days before his father died at the age of 74. His will was probated later in the month [Will Book 8, Tazewell, Co., VA], devising "his property to wife, N.B.D. May." Soon afterward, Nelle returned to Prestonsburg and built a fine home on 2nd Avenue, where other members of her Davidson family lived. She died in November 1918 at the age of 38, during the influenza pandemic that swept across the nation.
